A bedpan liner (1) for lining a bedpan (3) comprises a bag (20) of a flexible polymer material closed at one end (25) and open at the other end (26). The closed end (25) of the bedpan liner (1 ) is secured to a base (4) of the bedpan (3) by double-sided adhesive tape (33). When secured to the bedpan (3) by the double¬ sided adhesive tape, a lower portion (29) of the bag (20) is spread outwardly to line an inner surface (14) of the bedpan (3), and an upper portion (30) of the bag (20) is folded downwardly over a flange (10) of the bedpan (3) and downwardly on the outer side of the side wall (5) of the bedpan (3). With the bedpan (3) so lined, it is ready for use. On completion of urinating or defecating into the lined bedpan (3), the upper portion (30) of the bag (20) is urged upwardly above the side wall (5) of the bedpan (3) with the urine and/or faeces located in the bag (3). The bag (3) is then tied with a tether strip (42). With the tied bag (20) still bonded to the bedpan liner (1) by the double-sided adhesive tape (33), the bedpan (3) is placed in a washing machine for washing and sterilisation thereof. The bag (20) and the double-sided adhesive tape (33) are water soluble at the temperature of the wash water. During washing the bedpan liner (1) dissolves, and the dissolved bedpan liner (1) together with the urine and/or faeces is flushed away with the wash water to a foul sewer.
