A lightweight and extensible information model for M2M systems is disclosed. The service layer information management architecture utilizes three categories of atomic objects, subjects, actions, and techniques. Information for use in the model is built using atomic information objects. APIs are used to perform operations and information processing by different nodes. Common service functions are used in the model as instances of a common common service information model.
