The headphone system has at least one set of headphones 100 having at least one loudspeaker 104b and at least one display screen 105a on the outside of the earpiece and visible to passers-by. Audio content is delivered from a handheld device (300, fig 3) by an audio signal input (201, fig 2). Visual materials and audible information related to the visual materials may be stored either in the handheld device or on a remote server (401, fig 4). An information management module (601, fig 6) delivers the stored visual materials and the related deliver audible information to the headphones. The information management module is configured to route audio content from the audio signal input to the loudspeaker and to deliver the audible information related to the visual material to the loudspeaker during pauses in the audio content. Thus, the wearer is informed of the status of the display. The visual materials may be advertisements, and the wearer may receive rewards.
