Creating an optical image from a hologram displayed on a spatial light modulator (SLM) the optical image being created using an input light beam 910, 920 arranged to illuminate at least part of the SLM, where an assembly is included that can move the input beam and SLM relative to one another. Preferably the input beam is moved by deflecting 930A the beam 910 in an angled optical element 900 that is rotated about an axis colinear with the optical axis of the input light beam. The hologram may be tiled or repeated across the SLM if the size of the hologram is smaller than the size of the SLM. The output light beam 920 is sufficiently large to always cover the SLM, a part or tile of the SLM encoding the whole hologram, at all directions of deflection. The holographic projection may be for a heads-up-display (HUD) in a vehicle.
