A steam generator and appliance, such as an iron, steam cleaner or oven, are disclosed. The steam generator 1 includes a heating chamber 2 having a sidewall comprising a heating element 3. The reservoir 2 may be divided into an upper 25 and lower portion 27, with the bottom section 27 being narrower than the wider top section 25. A thermal sensor may be configured to detect temperatures of the element 3 as an indication of a water level being below predetermined heights of the lower portion and this used to control the water level. The disclosed steam generator has a small footprint allowing for the appliances it is used in to be small and compact. The vertical heating element configuration allows the lower portion to have reduced width, thus holding small volume of water and so provides reduced heating times.
