An aircraft monitoring system, for real time monitoring of flaps 20, landing gear 14,16, or tail skid 27 for determining safe taxi, take-off, and flight readiness, includes one or more monitoring units 24,25,26,27. The monitoring units may comprise scanning LiDAR devices combined with cameras or sensors and may be mounted in aircraft exterior locations. The monitoring units produce a stream of meshed data that is securely transmitted to a processing system 34 to generate a real time visual display of the flaps, landing gears, or tail skid for communication to aircraft pilots via a cockpit display. The system is intended to ensure actual flap position alignment with optimal flap setting, proper retraction and extension positions of landing gears, and tail skid condition.
