A dosimeter device 1 is provided for use when welding. The device comprises one or more sensors 3a-c for monitoring hazardous products of a welding process. Each sensor is connected via a data receiver to a data storage device for recording sensor readings. A transmitter is provided for transmitting data to an external database or handheld device. The device 1 may further comprise an audible or visual alarm. The sensor may comprise an electrochemical sensor, catalytic bead, photoionization detector, or infrared sensor, and may be arranged to detect toxic gases, combustible gases, or volatile organic compounds. Each sensor may be replaceable. The device 1 may comprise an attachment means such as a clip for attachment to a welders clothing, torch or helmet. In a further aspect, a welding mask is provided including a dosimeter device operably attached to a surface of the mask. The mask may comprise a slot for housing the dosimeter device. In another aspect, a comparison of recorded sensor readings is made with a database of predetermined safe values of a hazardous product, and where a detected value is outside a predetermined safe value, a warning is generated.
