Report on the Effects of Introducing English Literature into EFL Reading Classroom Activities through Cooperative Learning: On the Prose of British Literature

摘要

The aim of this paper is to report on the effect of introducing literature as a teaching aid into the EFL classroom to educate through cooperative learning. The use of English literature in EFL classrooms in universities has been decreasing in recent years. It is doubtful whether this tendency meets the needs of students. As the basis of this study, from July 2009 to February 2010 an English poem was introduced into the classroom as an example of English literature. The results showed that students considered the introduction of a literary text as a teaching material made learning interesting. With this in mind, from April 2012 to January 2013 some British prose texts were introduced into two EFL reading classrooms through cooperative learning. A total of 90 students at Kansai University were surveyed on their opinions of literary texts as materials for the study of English. The students learned English by reading proseworks, and frequently discussed the works in small groups, and then each group recitedthe prose they chose. This paper, therefore, aims to report on the effects of theintroduction of literary texts as a part of teaching materials and of cooperative learning.
