摘要

Thanks to Nagasaki's trade with China, there were 151 kinds of Chinese calligraphy rubbings, totally 3797 volumes, being imported to Japan during the Edo period. More specifically, with the prosperity of the writing style of Tang Dynasty in China, the mid-to-late Edo period witnessed a growing demand for Chinese calligraphy rubbings, One of the three celebrated calligrapher of Edo is Ichikawa Beian, who quoted plenty Chinese calligraphy rubbings in his books. That is not to say that he collected all the rubbings himself but at least it proved that he had seen those rubbings. Inspired by the acceptance of Chinese calligraphy in Japan, this article is dedicated to the study of the imported Chinese calligraphy rubbings and how the Japanese calligraphers accepted Chinese calligraphy in light of those rubbings.
