This paper examines the classification of the parts of speech in traditional Chineselinguistics, particularly, the classification methodology in the Mashiwentong and itssubsequent history. Also examined are the related terms and the relationship betweenthe traditional Chinese linguistics and the modern Chinese linguistics. This researchshows that linguistic perceptions transformed with the shift from traditional to modernChinese language studies, and that there was an importation processes of methodology and terms from Western and Japanese language research.
