The Early Japanese Language Textbooks Compiled by Chinese : Dong yu jian yao, Dong yu ru men, and Dong yu zheng gui

摘要

This essay explores the development of early Chinese edited Japanese language teaching materials. The three textbooks – Dongyu jianyao, Dongyu rumen and Dongyu zhengui – are anayalsed as representative development as all three are early exemplars of Japanese textbooks for Chinese students and refl ect the contemporary purpose behind the study of Japanese. The form as well as the changes in the awarenessof Japanese refl ect the development of a control over the knowledge of the Japaneselanguage. At the same time, with the corresponding development of an increased needfor foreign languages, the Chinese editing of a Japanese language book is seen as aninevitable trend. These three textbooks were referred to as examples and sources in latertextbooks and were extremely infl uential.
