Women with Female Genital Mutilation and the Health Care Professionals who care for them: Perceptions of Health Care with an emphasis on sexual health

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is the procedure that intentionally alters or causes injury tothe female genital organs for non-medical reasons. This term refers to all procedures thatinvolve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia. More than 50,000 womenborn in a country practicing Female Genital Mutilation are now living in Sweden. Health CareProfessionals treat these women every day with little knowledge or education on thesewomen’s culture or FGM in general. The sexual Health of these women is often ignored in thebelief that these women cannot experience a normal healthy sex life. However these womendue experience orgasm and many have an intact clitoris under an infibulation scar. HealthCare professionals need a broader general education that includes an emphasis on cultural andpatient centered care.
