Not just a spice, but a way of life

摘要

East-Indian people have moved from India to the Caribbean about 150 years ago. While keepinga close community, they have preserved their culture, including cultural practice associatedwith spices.In this thesis, I explore cultural aspects associated with the spice turmeric. I show how it hasaffected the daily life of many East-Indians in the diaspora. I also demonstrate the route thespice has taken to get to places like the Caribbean. Finally I illustrate the significance thespice holds within cultural aspects and rituals.My research interviews were conducted on the Caribbean Island of Trinidad in March of2012. Interviews were conducted with three individuals. The findings demonstrate how turmericis used, both as a spice and as an ingredient in rituals.
