Lessons from damage and reconstruction of Genkai Island suffered by Fukuokaken Seiho-oki Earthquake

Houses and house lots on sloping ground have suffered extensive storm damage on the Genkai Island as a result of the Fukuokaken Seiho-oki Earthquake. As a result，residents have been living in temporary emergency housing for al ong period. Reconstruction work on the island, in cluding repairs to sloping ground and house lots, is advancing well according to the Genkai Island reconstruction. This research is based on a questionnaire survey and aims at evaluating long-term shelter life, the reconstruction plan, house rebuilding, and issues relating to the future for Genkai Island residents, who are approaching the end of their time in emergency housing. The results of the questionnaire are compared with previous questionnaires executed in July 2005 and January 2006. It is found that residents at whom the object of the shelter life cancellation arrived were beginning to settle down again although they were not able to secure the house they had hoped for. They had an improved opinion of the reconstruction plan but remained worried about the future of the island.
