A model for responsible black clam fisheries at R-Blockudin Vembanad Lake, Kerala

摘要

Kuttanad is a stretch of low-lying land of aboutud110,000 ha along the banks of Vembanad Lake andudPamba River tributaries. It encompasses vast stretchudof backwaters, bordering human settlements,udmangrove forests and rice fields. Four major riversudsuch as, Pamba, Meenachil, Achankovil and Manimalauddischarge into this region. It has the distinction of beingudone of the few areas in the world, where paddy farmingudis carried out below the sea level. The area is quiteudfamous for its fishery for clams, pearlspot (Etroplusudsuratensis), snakehead (Channa spp.) and freshwaterudprawns (Macrobrachium spp.).
