Over exploitation, habitat destruction, introduction of exoticudspecies and pollution has led to the loss of native germplasm.udBiodiversity conservation is very important to preserveudspecies and also to safeguard the local interest and theudcultural attachment of people to certain species. Severaludspecies from India are already extinct and many are endangered,udthreatened or listed in diff erent categories based onudtheir natural presence. The estimated current extinction rateudis very high, ranging between 1000-10000 times the naturaludrateud. Hence, appropriate strategies for biodiversity conservationudmanagement are required.
