Mass envenomation during Ganesh idol immersion at Girgaum-Chowpathyudbeach, Mumbai, Maharashtra

At the end of South-West monsoon alongudMumbai coast a swarm of the box jelly fish,udChiropsoides buitendijki was observed duringudGanesh idol immersion at Girgaum-Chowpathyudbeach, Mumbai on 10th September, 2013. Theudoccurrence of such large number of jelly fishesudcoincided with Ganesh idol immersion, perhaps forudthe first time in Mumbai waters. Several devoteesudof Ganesh who congregated at Girgaum-Chowpathyudbeach for immersion ritual of Ganesh idol were stungudby the jelly fish. According to the news paperudreports, the devotees moved with the idol in ankledeepudwater for immersion and immediately thinudtentacle-like threads pierced legs and ankles causingudsevere burning sensation.
