For a study of the early developmental stages ofudmarine fishes occurring in the locality where work isudtaken up, it is essential to acquire a sound knowledgeudon the various species occurring in that area. TheudRamanathapuram District wherein Mandapam and the adjoiningudareas are located, has a coast-line of about 260 km coveringudthe sea front of Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay. These seasudhave lucrative fishing grounds with good concentrationudof finfishes, shellfishes, seaweeds and other organismsudof economic importance.
