Occurrence of Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 at Mumbai, Maharashtra

Octopuses popularly called as ‘devilfish’ areudcaught mainly as bycatch in the bottom trawl. Dueudto the growing demand for octopus in the internationaludmarket, octopus fishery is catching up inudMaharashtra. The main fish landing centres forudoctopus in Mumbai are New Ferry Wharf andudSassoon Dock. Octopuses contribute 3.6% towardsudthe total cephalopod catch in Mumbai. Ommen (1971,ud1977) identified many new species of octopus alongudthe west coast of India.
