Coastal aquaculture is one among the age- udold avocations of man. The Romans and the udJapanese are known to have practised oyster udculture in its primitive form for several centuries udand the South-East Asian countries have been udcarrying out fish culture for at least five udcenturies now. While the developed countries/ udwhere aquaculture was started in recent times, udhave far advanced in the field with sophisticated udtechnology, in the few developing countries, udincluding India, which have traditional forms of udaquaculture, it still remains at subsistence level, udalmost as it was in the distant past. But the udrecent developments in coastal aquaculture in udthis region signify the beginning of a new era in udfisheries development with a thrust on the udculture fisheries.
