The term fingerprinting was coined by Alec Jeffreys in i 985 to describe the patternudof highly variable, individual-specific profilesudthat he and his colleagues saw in Southernudblots ofhuman genomic DNA hybridizedudto a tandemly-arrayed repetitive DNA sequence.
