Empleo de las Fuerzas Armadas en operaciones de control al narcotráfico y su impacto en la seguridad del Ecuador: 2009-2012

The drug comes as an instrument of transnational organized crime that operates under new dynamic deployment, with a specialized and technology, which often exceeds the capabilities government administration. The resources obtained from the sale of drugs promote other related crimes such as trafficking in arms, people, precursors, etc. unleashing a trail of violence and corruption in public and private institutions of the state.The proximity of Colombia and Peru as major drug producers in the world, the United States as the main consumer market, other countries in the region as a transit area and not only production but also consumption and for processing of Ecuador also have led governments to seek new public health initiatives to employ the armed forces to fight it.The political decision to directly engage the military in combating drug trafficking brings different positions and debates how to deal with this issue as a matter of internal security or national security. However, it is significant that in light of the impact it brings to the Armed Forces in the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking, to reflect necessary to analyze the effects this has had on other countries in the "war against drug cartels”.
