Hadron energy reconstruction for the Atlas barrel prototype combinedcalorimeter, consisting of the lead-liquid argon electromagnetic part and theiron-scintillator hadronic part, in the framework of the non-parametricalmethod has been fulfilled. This method uses only the known e/h ratios and theelectron calibration constants and does not require the determination of anyparameters by a minimization technique and can be used for the fast energyreconstruction in the first level trigger. The obtained reconstruction of themean values of energies is within $\pm 1%$ and the fractional energy resolutionis $[(58\pm3)% \sqrt{GeV}/\sqrt{E}+(2.5\pm0.3)%]\oplus (1.7\pm0.2) GeV/E$. Theobtained value of the e/h ratio for electromagnetic compartment of the combinedcalorimeter is $1.74\pm0.04$ and agrees with the prediction that $e/h > 1.7$for this electromagnetic calorimeter. The results of the study of thelongitudinal hadronic shower development are presented. The data have beentaken in the H8 beam line of the CERN SPS using pions of 10 -- 300 GeV.
