Environmental research requires access to qualitycontrolled, calibrated data. Satellite altimeter data areused in a range of environmental research, includingoceanography, ice and land surface studies. Users whoare not altimeter specialists may not be aware of, orhave access to, the latest updates and most appropriatecorrections to use for their application.We propose a GRID based methodology to give allusers access to the best possible altimeter data productat the time of the request, tailor made for their specificapplication. A data portal system would be based on a"Network of Trust" consisting of the data providers anda certificating authority. Data could be served through afully interactive web 'front-end' or directly from withinanalysis programmes.This system would build on the experiences gained incombining two existing Altimeter Data services (GAPSand RADS) to produce a coherent data service withalternative web interfaces and configurable users access.
