THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL LIFE ON THE DIFFERENCES OF PRONUNCIATION IN “FREEDOM WRITER” MOVIE

Keyword : differences in pronunciation, social lifeududsurvive. One of the ways to do the social interaction is by holding a communication. To do this process, people need a tool which is known as language. Besides, concerning for the human communication, it cannot be separated from the different language used in societies. Language has different dialect; the word dialect refers to a variety of a language which is different from others not just in pronunciation but also in such matters as vocabulary, grammar, and word order. In this study, the writer tried to find out the different pronunciation used by characters in “Freedom Writer” movie and the social life influence in the differences of pronunciation in “Freedom Writer” movie.ududIn conducting this study, the writer used qualitative research design because the data collected were in the form of words rather than numbers. Moreover, the object of the study was the whole dialogues of movie related to the problem of the study. Analyzing the social life influence in the differences of pronunciation in “Freedom Writer” movie, in this study the writer use Roach (2009) as the main theory and Jendra (2010) as the second theory.ududThe result of this study showed that the differences in pronunciation that used by the characters in “Freedom Writer” movie is differences in rhotic and non-rhotic accent and differences in vowel pronunciation. The first difference is rhotic and non-rhotic accent; they are two words showed rhotic and non-rhotic accent found in this study, e.g., teacher and color. Another difference is the differences in vowel pronunciation; the writer finds 4 words that different in vowel; they are die, class, Eva, and Homer. Therefore, the second finding of the data analysis in the previous part has shown that the social life influence in the differences of pronunciation in “Freedom Writer” movie is different ethnicity.
