STRATEGIES USED BY HIGH-ACHIEVERS IN READING CLASS OF 3rd SEMESTER OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AT UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

Keyword : strategies, high-achievers, readingududThis research aimed to describe the strategy that used by high-achievers in reading of 3rd semester of English Department and to find out the implementation of the strategy that used by high-achievers in reading class of 3rd semester of English at University of Muhammdiyah Malang.ududThe researcher employed descriptive qualitative research design. The research subjects were 10 high-achievers of 3rd semester of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. As the instrument for the research, furthermore the researcher used in-depth interview.ududIt was found that skimming and scanning strategies were the favorite strategies in reading used by all of high-achievers of 3rd semester of English Department at University Muhammadiyah Malang. In this case, 8 of high-achievers employed skimming and scanning simultaneously, while 2 others of high-achievers utilized skimming or scanning only. Then, the use of skimming and scanning as the favorite strategies in reading made them easier to comprehend the text without reading the whole of the text, skip unnecessary paragraph, just looking for the gist in the text, answer the question directly. High-achievers also used other strategies beside skimming and scanning of which comprises of guessing the meaning from the context, summarizing and predicting. The other strategies in reading was used when they faced the difficult text such as; in journal and scientific text. In skimming, high-achievers only looked for the main idea, skip unnecessary paragraphs or skip the difficult vocabulary, read the text fast. In scanning, high-achievers identified the specific key words in the text or question like pictures and number before scanning information expected.
