Academic Identity and Ingroup Derogation : Verification of Social Identity Theory in Diplomaism.

The present study investigates the joint effect of group identification and self esteem on stereotyping for ingroup and outgroup. In study 1 90 undergraduates from a national university ranked in the middle level on dimension of academic entry in Japan served as subjects. They were asked to list and evaluate stereotypical characteristics of their own and other rivalry universities. It was found that in general they endorsed negative stereotype for own university and positive one for other university. This tendency of ingroup derogation and outgroup favoritism was attenuated for those who were high in group-identification but low in self-esteem. The similar results were obtained in Study 2 where 120 undergraduates from one of the top-ranked national universities in Japan served as subjects. The results were discussed in terms of recent developments of social identity theory and diplomaism in Japanese society.
