Reading is a critical competency to develop at school; however, reading goes well beyond the simple ability to decode a text. It is equally important to allow our students to develop their capacity to understand and interpret what they read. Beyond these competencies, we believe that in order to allow our students to become reader-subjects, the school must become a place where our students also develop a love of reading. We believe that this love of reading can be shared with them provided that we are able to actively engage them in literary texts. We hypothesize that the use of book clubs can enable our students in second and third grade to better understand the texts and have the freedom to be more personally involved in reading them and therefore engage in genuine interpretative discussions. Furthermore, we believe that this method allows us to give our students a desire to read through group discussions while at the same time enriching their personal culture and the culture of the class.
