This article investigates how spatial layout, the display of goods, body movement and gaze work alongside verbalised linguistic codes inudcreating a Translanguaging Space, using data from a linguisticudethnography project in a family retail shop in East London. We argueudthat while positioning itself as a “Polski Sklep” (Polish shop) inudLondon, the shop is a Translanguaging Space – a space created byudTranslanguaging practices and for Translanguaging practices – andudTranslanguaging involves the deployment and orchestration ofudvarious sense-making repertories beyond linguistic ones. We areudparticularly interested in showing how physical boundaries areudplayed out and emphasised, together with multimodal resources, toudmark the place as a Polish shop in London. We use the notion ofudcommunicative zones to analyse the connectivities wherebyudparticipants communicate with and involve each other in encounters,udand examine how multimodal resources are orchestrated inudcommunicative zones of service encounters, mobilised to interweaveudcommunicative zones and assembled in tune with the depth ofudinvolvement. We show a Translanguaging Space in the making inudwhich participants, including the shop owners and the customers,udorchestrate a variety of multilingual and multimodal resourcesudwithout any a priori hierarchy to create a Polish shop in London, audspace to experience Polish shopping in the diaspora.
