Discussion on Moral Teaching in Special Needs Class- Practice with Roll Playing and Social Skills Training -

In 2009, part of the new guidelines for teaching (2008) was put into practice in elementary and middle schools in Japan. Teachers are expected to nurture rich humanity of children, by teaching morals while modifyingand adding spice to conventional moral education, and promote moral teaching according to developmental levels of students. It has been suggested that it is effective to proactively include role playing, etc. in class for senior students.In addition, the introduction of group exercise, such as social skills training (SST), is attracting attention. Various modifications and innovations are expected in moral teaching. On the other hand, most special needs schools conduct moral teaching in comprehensive school education, without doing it as independent class. In this study, the meanings of the setting of a moral class and the introduction of role playing and SST were discussed, with the purpose of promoting moral teaching in a special needs class. As a result, significant differences were observed in the thoughtful thinking and behavior of children. This result indicates the possibility that the moral teaching in a special needs class will develop morality and children will become kind and thoughtful.
