High speed satellite communication networks areemerging as part of the future global wireless communicationsystems. However, existing transmission control protocols forsatellite networks do not provide satisfactory performance overhigh speed satellite links due to their inefficient congestionavoidance algorithms. This paper identifies the reason for lowthroughput of a widely used protocol Space CommunicationsProtocol Specification (SCPS) in such networks and proposes anew Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) congestion avoidancealgorithm to overcome the drawback of the congestion avoidancealgorithm used in the SCPS protocol. Numerical results throughsimulations demonstrate that the proposed new algorithm canachieve significant throughput improvement over links withvariable error rates, compared with its legacy counterpart.
