This study aims at determining differences between the improvement of physics learning outcomes using pocket book media and one without using the media of pocket book. Students’ learning outcomes are reviewed from cognitive domains. This study also aims at determining students’ responses to the media used. This research used experimental method with pretest-posttest control group design. The population of this study was all students of class X of SMA N 1 Ngemplak Sleman in the academic year of 2009/2010, while the sample was carried out in two classes. The students of class X-C taught by using the pocket book media were as the experimental group. The students of class X-A taught without using media pocket book were as the control class. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. The data used were students’ learning outcomes in the cognitive domain and students' responses to the media. Cognitive learning outcomes were derived from the scores of the pretest and posttest, while students' responses to the media were obtained from the questionnaire sheets. The analysis used to test the validity and reliability of the pretest and posttest was by using ITEMAN application program. To test the hypothesis of the research, SPSSTM application program version 16.0 was used, especially the t-test with independent samples. The results showed that there were significant differences in the physics teaching between the class using the pocket book media and another without media pocket book with the average of students’ learning outcomes on cognitive domains with a significance level of 5%. The class using the physics teaching with pocket book media was better than another without the media. The research results also showed that most students responded positively to the use of the media in the amount of 82.9% and the students giving negative responses were amounted to17.1%.
