Car Travel Time Variability onudLinks of a Radial Route in London: Methodology, Surveys and Data Processing

This working paper is one of a series of three describingudresearch on travel time variability of car drivers using a northudLondon corridor. The objectives of the work described in thisudreport were to determine the amount of variability experiencedudwithin short time periods and between time periods, and toudexplain these variations in terms of simultaneously-recordedudtraffic factors.udududThis report describes the methodology used, the surveys carriedudout and the data processing procedures. Data were collected onudtwelve contiguous links on the A41 between 0730 and 1030 onudweekdays in spring and again in summer. Link travel-timeuddistributions for cars were obtained by registration-plateudmatching using hand-held electronic data loggers. The methodsudof treatment of spurious matches and outliers, resultingudrespectively from chance matching of partial registration numbersudand from stopping or diverting vehicles, are described. Theudreasons for selecting particular explanatory traffic variablesudare presented, together with a description of the methods of dataudcollection.udThe results of these surveys and their analysis are contained inudITS Working Paper 279.
