A steady laminar flow of an incompressible non-Newtonianf1uid ( power law fluid ) in the inlet region of rectangularduct was studied by the theoretical analysis usingfinite difference methods and the experiment on pressuredrop. Theoretical predictions were cornpared with experimentaldata and analytical results available and theagreement was shown to be satisfactory. Therefore, thepressure drop and the velocity distribution in the inletregion were discussed on the basis of typical computations. It was shown that the velocity in the duct center and thepressure drop of a non-Newtonian fluid were srnaller thanthose of a Newtonian fluid, the inlet length of a non-New-tonian fluid was larger than that of a Newtonian fluid andthe additional pressure loss in the inlet region was srnal-ler in a non-Newtonian fluid than in a Newtonian fluid.
