A new vector finite element formulation is presented for the analysis of the waveguideswith l08s or gain based on the transverse electric field components and axial magneticfield component. Trial fields are constructed with vector shape functions of m-th orderfor transverse fields and scalar shape functions of (m+l)-th order for the axial fields.In this approach complex propagation constants are obtained as the eigenvalues for thegiven frequency. To verify the accuracy of the present method,nu merical results fora dielectric loaded rectangular waveguides and an one-dimensional model of the gainguidedsemiconductor laser array are presented and compared with the exact solution.
