Improving Knowledge Building Discourse in Knowledge Forum

It is easy enough to get students to pose ideas and questions in online environments like Knowledge Forum. But how do we go beyond this to a discourse that is truly interactive and produces collective idea improvement and knowledge advancements? In many databases we find that students are not really answering questions or interacting with each other’s ideas, but rather share their ideas. In this talk I will draw from recent studies by our group that examine the state of knowledge building among teachers and students in Hong Kong, using assessment tools we have developed and the inspection of databases. I will then outline some practical strategies for evaluating the state of knowledge building and scaffolding students’ work on Knowledge Forum.
