The increase of data rates in optical telecommunication systems to 10Gbps and40Gbps, particularly for distances in excess of 150 km, favours the use of externalmodulation, and in particular electro optical modulators. The driver circuit of thesemodulators thus become a key component of fiber optic transmission systems.The first chapters of this thesis present a description of the most common systems andarchitectures used, allowing us thereby to define performance specifications for the externalmodulator driver circuits, and in particular electro optical drivers. Distributed amplifiers fulfilthese requirements well, due in particular to their high gain bandwidth product and a detailedstudy of distributed amplifiers and their various configurations is carried out. The designedamplifiers were produced based on a 0.15 μm PHEMT gallium arsenide technology.In order to simplify the packaging and to solve the problems caused by the classicaldistributed amplifier's biasing, two novel integrated biasing circuits were developed. First ofall, a novel active load, taking place of termination of the output line of the distributedamplifier, was designed to bias the amplifier and makes it possible to preserve the outputmatching during the variation in the current bias, for a gain control for example. Also anintegrated device composed of current sources connected to the output line of the distributedamplifier, called an active bias T, is studied. The realization of an optical modulator driver, bypackaging a distributed amplifier using the active bias T, has been validated by scatteringparameter measurements and, electrical and optical eye diagrams.
