George Saunders is a fiction writer and essayist whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, McSweeneyu27s, Harperu27s, and GQ, earning him the National Magazine Award for fiction in 1994, 1996, 2000, and 2004. He is also responsible for several acclaimed short story collections, including CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, a finalist for the 1996 PEN/Hemingway Award, and In Persuasion Nation, a finalist for The Story Prize in 2007. On his way to becoming a professor at Syracuse University, Saunders worked as a technical writer and geophysical engineer, a member of an oil exploration crew in Sumatra, and as a knuckle-puller in a Texas slaughterhouse.
