This study explores the tension between the preservation of cultural andudpolitical identity and economic modernization in the higher education systemsudin the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC)udbetween 1949 and 1993.udChapter One introduces the research problem, theoretical orientation,udmain argument, and organization of this thesis.udChapter Two examines the historical context of the higher educationudsystems of the PRC and the ROC, and identifies the similarities between theudpre-1949 higher education system and the two contemporary Chinese higherudeducation systems.udChapter Three analyzes the contemporary (domestic and international)udcontexts of higher education in the PRC and the ROC. The chapter highlightsudthe monolithic, state-supported, official value systems of both countries; theuddomestic relations between the ruling party, the state, the economy and theudpeople; and the international relations of the two countries, as these affect theudhigher education systems. Chapter Four investigates the cultural tasks of both higher educationudsystems, and reviews the ways in which they have institutionalized differentudforms of cultural and political identity.udChapters Five and Six analyze the economic tasks of both higherudeducation systems. Chapter Five examines the importation of science andudtechnology, and the social values of science and technology in both countries.udChapter Six examines the processes of institutionalizing, in higher education,uddifferent foreign models of science and technology.udChapter Seven reviews the patterns of similarities and differencesudbetween both higher education systems, and explores the specific and theudbroader implications of the thesis.
