The authors point out essential changes in the ratio of the number of students to the number of academic staff in the nineties. The main problem which has to be solved is to make the most of the professional qualifications and knowledge of academic staff. Who should deliver lectures, classes, laboratory lectures and seminars - professors, assistant professors or assistants? Answering that question one has to analyse two aspects - the quality of education and the cost of academic staff. Structures of all types of university classes have been analysed, using as an example the data of one technical university in 2000/2001. It appears that some university classes were not planned in an optimal way. This primarily concerns professors and associate professors. Due to the lack of subsidies nowadays and in the near future, this situation should be changed as soon as possible.
