In Japan we have various kinds of iron sands buried. Although many attempts have been made to utilise these iron sands as the source of both iron and TiO_2-pigment they didn't succeeded until 1949. In 1949 they have succeeded industrially to produce pig iron of low P-content and the slag containing 40 to 60% TiO_2, from the iron sand of 30 to 35% TiO_2-content. This investigation has been done to see whether these kinds of slags are suitable as the raw material of TiO_2-pigment production, principally from the standpoint of digestion yield and the quality of the pigment odtained therefrom. The results can be summarised as follows: 1. Digestion yield is somewhat lower than that of the ilmenite. 2. Slags with relatively high content of Fe_2O_3 give low digestion yields. 3. As to the quality of the TiO_2-pigment obtained, it can be said that among the basic constituents, Al, Mg and Ca has no appreciable bad influence on the quality of the pigment. 4.
