FCFS-R5-067: Management of Knowledge Transfer Programmeudon Good Aquaculture Practices to Seabass Cage Culture Farmersudin Tumpat, Kelantan

摘要

Seabass brackish water cage culture is a veryudprofitable and challenging enterprise. However, theudmain problem of the culture is high mortality of fishuddue to factors such as improper management, waterudquality, environmental and diseases. The fish farmingudcommunity in Laguna Sri Tujuh, Tumpat, Kelantan,udhas been continuously facing poor production ofudseabass due to high mortality of fish (fish kill) andudpoor aquaculture practices among fish farmers sinceudthe start of the cage culture in 2003. Knowledgeudtransfer programme on good aquaculture practicesud(GAP) was initiated and undertaken by a group ofudresearchers from Universiti Malaysia Kelantanud(UMK) in January, 2016. Knowledge on GAP wasudtransferred to the community through onsite trainingudby using the Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysiaudseabass cage culture cluster project site as a model forudthis community. Guidance on water quality monitoringudand methods on improving water quality wereuddemonstrated. Important records such as dailyudmortality rate, feed consumption, fish stocks, andudwater physical properties were established. Theudfarmers were taught on proper way of grading fish,udfeed and feeding management, proper waste disposal,udprudent use of drugs, and use of immune enhancers asudpreventive medicine. In addition, Faculty ofudVeterinary Medicine, UMK also provides fish diseaseuddiagnostic services to the fish farmers. It is envisageudthat the seabass cage culture farmers who participatedudin this programme will be able to improve theirudproduction and raised their income by reducing fishudmortality. The programme also aims to strengthenudcollaboration among fish farming community, DOF’sudauthority and researchers of UMK in promoting GAP udfor sustainable and profitable aquaculture. Theudprogramme will also produce a competent graduateudintern with knowledge and technical skills in theudbrackish water cage culture, enhancing herudemployability in the aquaculture sector
