Michèle Alliot-Marie and Roselyne Bachelot have witnessed extraordinary changes in the political image, the triumph of communication and audiovisual media which all coincides with the growing importance of women in French politics. Women ministers are undergoing and taking part in a heterosexualization of power, a word which describes the visibility and scenography of women and men in government and their sexualized relations. Analysing the gender performances of Roselyne Bachelot and Michèle Alliot-Marie reveals the advantages and disadvantages of, respectively, feminisation and masculinisation strategies. Part of their success has to be explained by their discreet art of mixing the gendered codes.
