The use of Johann Sebastian Bach's chorales in David Maslanka's Quintet for winds No. 3 for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon

This study presents analytical and historical insight into David Maslanka's Quintet for Winds No. 3 for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, and Bassoon. A defining feature of the quintet is Maslanka's incorporation of Johann Sebastian Bach's chorales as major melodic, harmonic, and structural aspects of the work. The reference to the original text of each chorale provides extra-musical meaning to the piece. In addition to analyzing the use of the Bach chorales in this quintet, performance suggestions are offered. Maslanka's compositional technique of borrowing J.S. Bach's chorales in this piece raises three issues that are discussed to provide background information to the reader: 1) the use and history of borrowing, 2) the history of the woodwind quintet genre and 3) the relationship of Maslanka's wind ensemble music to this woodwind quintet. The purpose of this study is twofold: to provide a performer with a better understanding to achieve a more insightful performance and to present this quintet as a unique and valuable addition to thewoodwind quintet genre.
