Transforming the Health Workforce to Improve Population Health: Innovative Approaches to Medical Education

Malika Fair, MD, MPH, FACEP is the Director of Public Health Initiatives at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). In this role, Dr. Fair directs both the Urban Universities for HEALTH (Health Equity through Alignment, Leadership, and Transformation of the Health Workforce) project and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Cooperative Agreement with the AAMC.Dr. Fair’s Forum presentation will address the social determinants of health that affect the health outcomes of patients and their communities. She will also describe the significance of developing a health workforce that has the background, qualities, and skills to care for a diverse patient population and to promote health equity. Opportunities in academia and practice across the health professions to enhance the teaching of population health concepts will also be discussed.Dr. Fair is an Assistant Clinical Professor and practicing physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine of The George Washington University. She completed her residency training and chief residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.
