The purpose of this study was to investigate theeffect of collaboration styles on insight problemsolving. We used a puzzle game called“ Tangram.”Tangram is a game that is consisted of sevenpieces of triangles and squares, and is consideredas one kind of insight problem. Participants(N=75)were randomly assigned to either solocondition, collaborative pair condition, or parallelpair condition, and were required to arrangethe pieces to the shape of a“lion.”In the solocondition, participants were asked to solve aTangram alone. In the collaborative pair condition, participants were given one Tangram per pair andwere asked to solve it together. In the parallel paircondition, participants were given two Tangramsper pair and were able to solve it individuallywhile having discussions. The result indicated thatthe collaboration styles did not significantly affectthe complete rate and the complete time. However,it had significant effect on the constraint relaxationrate and the content of the conversations. Finally,we discussed the result and implication forcollaborative learning using Tangram.
