In the discipline of non-Newtonian materials, the ability to controlviscoelastic stresses is very desirable in ascertaining important propertiesof the influenced materials. We apply the nonlinear geometriccontrol theory to examine the controllability of various popular constitutivemodels with imposed homogeneous extensional flow. The subsequentconstitutive laws considered here include the Phan-Thien-Tannermodel, the Johnson-Segalman model, the Giesekus model and the Doimodel. This paper provides the first analysis on the effect of extensionalflow on these models.
