Galvanic aspects of aluminum sacrificial anode alloys in artificial seawater were investigated. Specifically, two mercury-bearing alloys and one tin-bearing alloy were studied. The polarization behavior of the aluminum sacrificial anode alloys coupled to HY-80 steel is discussed. Current versus time curves were obtained for aluminum/steel galvanic couples immersed in artificial seawater for specific intervals. Scanning elecron microscopy was used to characterize the anode dissolution patterns and the corrosion mechanisms. A correlation is made between the dissolution morphologies exhibited by each anode alloy and the polarization and galvanic current data.
