In a thin elastic sheet, with a hole in the center, subject touniform tension on two opposite edges, a small area at the rim of thehole along the diameter of the hole parallel to the tension is incompression circumferentially. This compression can cause buckling in this area. Such bucklingmay occur before the sheet yields at its point of maximum stress.
