Impact of the Occupational Safety and Health Act on U.S. Naval construction forces

The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) effective29 December 1970 (P. L. 91-596) and its impact on theU. S. Naval Construction Force (NCF) is examined.The history of the occupational safety legislation inthe United States is summarized and discussed. The OSH Actis condensed and interpreted as to meaning.Existing safety programs within the Navy Department, theNaval Facilities Engineering Command, and the Naval ConstructionForce are discussed and compared with the intentof the OSH Act.Specific conclusions on current attitudes towards the OSHAct and safety in the Navy are made, and recommendationsfor improvement are generated.
